PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
With Bells On! is an indie stationery company – I design and craft wedding stationery suites for alternative couples who are looking for something a bit offbeat. I usually work from scratch, getting to know each couple and creating something just for them, but I have some customisable collections to choose from too!
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
I feel like the wedding industry can be archaic and not very inclusive, rife with under-representation of whole groups of people. And I love to create bespoke, unique and fun stationery for people who might be not be able to find what they like elsewhere – something that is meaningful to them as a couple. So I started With Bells On! because it balances of my love for vibrant, joyful design and it allows me to be an open-minded, friendly ally to people who don’t want ‘traditional’ or ‘expected’ to rule what they do with their big day!
HOW DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
Every day is different, which I’m sure every small business says! My first port-of-call is to check emails, Instagram, Etsy and my listings to make sure I quickly get back to anyone who’s reached out. The rest of the day is a mix of designing, researching, chatting to people, printing, cutting, sticking, popping down the Post Office…! I love the variation of tasks and I work from a little corner of my home!
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Without a doubt my favourite part of the job is when a couple opens up a delivery from me and are STOKED, they can’t wait to send out their invitations. There’s this little window of time around that when their guests start receiving post, talking about it and sharing it and ultimately getting SO excited about the wedding. I think that fast feedback loop and knowing I’ve made people happy – cheesy as that might seem – is such a big win.
AND WHAT IS THE WORST PART?
There’s lots of business stuff that isn’t so fun! I reckon reaching the right people – those who want what I sell, and more importantly want to work with me – is hard. So I’d say those sorts of things that are necessary as a small company but take my focus off of the stationery and couples is my least fave, but the good outweighs it all!
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Do it your way. You can’t please everybody and you should feel proud of what you do.
WHAT WOULD YOU WANT COUPLES TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
I have no expectations – about your day, your relationships, your style and tastes. My job is simply to listen, to advise and to create something that tells your story.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
It’s so, so easy to lose sight of what matters, which is that you’re a team and you’re celebrating your love. So many couples slip down the rabbit hole and panic about which forks to choose, how much weight they need to lose and who might argue at the wedding… Eurgh, it’s exhausting for you! Focus on each other, that’s all that matters.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU DIDN’T WORK IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY?
My career until WBO has been crafting the user experience of apps and sites for companies like Patch and Topshop, so I’d be doing that!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR TIME OFF?
Karaoke, crazy golf – You don’t actually have to have skill in either of these to enjoy them! – drinks with friends, getting tattoos, watching RuPaul.
Our honeymoon was pretty dreamy – We hopped around Scandinavia for a few weeks! We flew to Stockholm, got a train to Copenhagen, got a boat to Oslo and drove to Bergen. From breath-taking landscapes to tiny dive bars, we had the BEST time! In the future we’d love to go to Japan.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
I’d love to post a meme of an 80s-power-suit-big-hair-boss here. I would love for With Bells On! to be working primarily through happy couples recommending me to people they know. It’d mean I wouldn’t have to slog on the marketing front and could focus purely on what makes me, and people who are engaged, really happy.
