PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
I’m Ross and in no particular order, I’m a professional wedding and portrait photographer, published author, obsessive ‘Great British Bake Off’ viewer and reluctant runner.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
I’d love to tell you that at the age of six, my grandfather gifted me an antique camera and I spent the rest of my childhood in the dark room following an early calling to the magical art of photography. However, the truth is that I didn’t really pick up a camera until my late twenties, but when I did, boy did it change my life. Not only did it provide me with a creative outlet and the opportunity to launch my own business, it provided me with a tool to empower others to feel amazing about who they are.
HOW DOES YOUR TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?
Normally, no two days are the same and are filled with meeting new couples (one of my favourite aspects of the job), shooting pre-wedding shoots, shooting weddings, editing, networking with other wedding suppliers, eating biscuits, and dancing around my office in between boring admin tasks!
WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Making people realise how wonderful and how photogenic they are. I never over-pose or over-edit my couples as I strongly believe everyone deserves to be celebrated for being the uniquely awesome person that they are.
When I witness couples fill up with emotion on seeing their wedding photos, and realising how fabulous they look, it makes all my hard work worthwhile.
AND WHAT IS THE WORST PART?
The admin! I left a dull admin job to start my own business, so days at my desk in the office aren’t the most exciting part. However, lots of music and biscuits get me through.
WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Focus on the things you can control and tune out everything else. It’s really helped in my business and has proved especially useful during the pandemic for obvious reasons.
WHAT WOULD YOU WANT COUPLES TO KNOW ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?
That my creativity is never prioritised over your comfort. My mission is to always produce incredible wedding photos without couples ever leaving their comfort zone. How you feel is as important to me as how you look.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR COUPLES PLANNING A WEDDING?
I have tons and tons of advice for couples and it’s all in my wedding planning book How to Have a Wedding as Individual as You Are (available on Amazon or free to all my couples).
My biggest advice is to build a wedding based on your own personality and values, and not get swept up into blog and social media posts that feature ‘must have” lists. Never bow to pressure to step away from what feels right for you.
WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU DIDN’T WORK IN THE WEDDING INDUSTRY?
I spent a large part of my career working with children with additional needs, so a return to a person-centred role would feel most natural.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR TIME OFF?
I’m always training for a running event (at present it’s the Brighton Marathon in September). I love a spot of gluten-free baking and of course spending time with James – my partner of 13 years.
I love Italy – and Florence in particular – so a week there with plenty of time to both rest and do a bit of travel photography.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN 10 YEARS?
Taking incredible wedding photos across the world, having won countless awards and provided amazing experiences for hundreds more couples.
